OKC woman dies after she and two other OKC motorcyclists crash on I-40 in Custer County

CUSTER COUNTY, Okla. (KFOR) – An Oklahoma City woman died Friday after she lost control of her motorcycle and crashed on Interstate 40 in Custer County.

Vonnie Long, 65, died at the scene of the crash after she crashed her 2020 Harley-Davidson on the Exit 71 off-ramp on I-40 West, approximately two miles east of Clinton, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol news release.

Long and two other motorcyclists from Oklahoma City – a 65-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man – attempted to take the off-ramp and failed to negotiate the curve, according to the news release.

Long lost control of the motorcycle, which then rolled and threw her. The 67-year-old man lost control and was thrown from his motorcycle. The other 65-year-old woman went off the left side of the road and struck a sign. Her motorcycle rolled and she was thrown from it, the news release states.

The 67-year-old man was taken to Alliance Health Center in Clinton where he is being treated for head and internal injuries. The 65-year-old woman was taken to Alliance, but later transported to the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City. She is being treated for head and internal injuries, according to the news release.

All three riders were wearing helmets, the news release states.
Bart Long, Vonnie's husband, is the 67-year-old man referenced in this article, and Donna Wilson, a friend, is the other 65-year-old woman, based upon the Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.

Vonnie Jo Honea Long, "Nightingale", age 65, gained her Heavenly wings on February 28, 2020.
Vonnie was born on September 26, 1954, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to the delight of her father, Thomas Jean Honea, and her mother, Mary Lee Stone. On February 14, 1979, Vonnie married her soulmate, Barton Allen Long. They shared a beautiful forty-one years together. Vonnie earned her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from the University of Oklahoma, of which she was very proud and continued to maintain her license every year even after she made the decision to be a stay-at-home mother to her two beautiful daughters, Alicia Reneé Long Wilson, and Katherine "Katie" Michelle Long. She lived in Oklahoma her entire life.
Vonnie had a lot of passions and hobbies. The last few years she found a deep passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles that brought her and Bart closer than ever during their retirement years. Vonnie was a member of HOG (Harley Owners Group) and fulfilled the role of secretary for the Storm Riders Chapter. Through Storm Riders, Vonnie and Bart met many friends who quickly became like family. Because of her nursing and caring nature, Vonnie was nicknamed "Nightingale" after the famous nurse Florence Nightingale. Vonnie passed at 11:57am doing exactly what she loved most; riding her Harley on a beautiful, sunny day.
Vonnie was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Lee Stone.
She is survived by her loving husband. Bart; her two daughters, Alicia and Katie; her son-in-law, Cory; her father, Tom; her step-mother, Betty; her sisters, Connie and Fawnie; her grandchildren, Ayden and Cate; her nieces Emily and Mindy; and many, many other family and friends.
A Memorial Service to honor her life will be held on Saturday, March 14th at 11:00am, at OKC Bethesda Church, 3101 SW 89th St, Oklahoma City, OK, 73159. Immediately following the memorial service, there will be a gathering at the family home to celebrate the life of our precious Nightingale. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made to Downed Bikers Association Oklahoma City Chapter in her honor to help fallen riders. We know this is what our Nightingale would have wanted.
